“Ted” Movie Review

    If you think a comedy about a sex addicted, pot smoking, foul languaged teddy bear sounds like a great movie (and who doesn’t), then “Ted” is the movie for you. Directed and written by Seth Macfarlane, “Ted” can be compared to an R rated version of his popular cartoon series “Family Guy”. It is a movie based around the premise that not all fairy tales have the conventional happy ending. Filled with raunchy and inappropriate scenes, “Ted” has all the right elements for a great comedy. While funny, do not be fooled, this is not a comedy for kids. Some parents learned this hard way in my particular theatre and quickly ushered their kids towards the exit.

   "Ted" stars Mark Walberg, Mila Kunis (recently named sexiest woman alive), and of course a stuffed bear named “Ted”, who is dubbed by Macfarlane. The story starts when a little boy wishes for his best friend (his teddy bear) to come alive during Christmas Eve. Like a true fairy tale this is exactly what happens, but this is where the kid friendly section stops. The majority of this movie takes place 27 years after this magical event. John (Walberg) and Ted have, for lack of better term, grown up into the typical stoner types. John’s girlfriend (Kunis), is fed up with Ted’s antics that turn the couple’s apartment into a hybrid of a brothel and a home. She gives John an ultimatum and Ted has to move out. In the process of finding a job, Ted gets into situations reminiscent of movies like “The Hang Over”. While not overly shocking for other R rated movies, the fact that this is a stuffed animal makes me smile every time. Ted ends up getting in trouble with the wrong people and John tries to come to his rescue.

    This movie has its flaws; there are plot holes and areas of no laughs in which Macfarlane could have improved. But when you pay to see a movie about a living plush toy, questions about plot and setting seem somehow irrelevant.

    With the amount of awful comedies being made lately, this movie is a shining star in an otherwise dying genre of film. The movie gives enough laughs and entertainment value to make it worth seeing.  If you are the logical type, I would not recommend this film for you. If you can sit back and embrace the ridiculous nature of this movie, then you will have a great time.
